Rice cultivation has entered its peak period in the past month. Farmers were busy transplanting rice seedlings in Shilan Town, Huayuan County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture recently.

With rich water resources and convenient water irrigation facilities, Shilan Town has a long history of rice cultivation. The Zila Tribute Rice produced here is well-known.

Shilan Town is located in the central part of Huayuan County, with an average altitude of over 500 meters. Soft soil, unique climate, and Youshui River make for high-quality Zila Tribute Rice which is well-received among consumers.

Shilan Town has planted more than 13,000 mu (about 866.67 hectares) of rice this year, and more than 7,000 mu (about 466.67 hectares) of fields have been sowed.

With strong support from the government departments of Huayuan County, a special working team has been established to control the quality of tribute rice, unify packaging methods, enhance brand influence, and expand sales channels, achieving good results.

Currently, Zila Tribute Rice has been sold on multiple online platforms such as Daman E-commerce and in multiple physical supermarkets of Changsha City and Huayuan County. It has also established order-based supply cooperation with multiple enterprises.

Zila Tribute Rice has been rated as a “China’s Important Agricultural Cultural Heritage” and a “National Geographical Indication Product”. It has enjoyed sound development momentum with the local government’s efforts to open up sales channels. According to statistics, Zila Tribute Rice achieved an output value of over 3,520 yuan per mu (about 0.067 hectares) in 2023, increasing the income of rice growers and enhancing the enthusiasm of villagers to plant rice.

The Miao people in Shilan Town have maintained a compound farming model of “rice, fish, ducks, birds, and frogs” for hundreds of years. Frogs and birds feed on pests, fish on weeds, and ducks on small fish and loaches, which can maintain the stabile paddy field ecosystem and ensure the healthy growth of rice throughout its entire growth cycle. This reflects the extraordinary wisdom of the Miao ancestors and also the ecological concept of farmers’ respect for nature.

Shilan Town is making efforts to promote industrial revitalization and boost villagers’ income.
